Education at Gomel State Medical University includes five to six-year programs in basic and clinical medical science. Upon admission to University students enter one of four different schools (faculties): General Medicine, Medical Diagnostics, Education for Foreign Students or the Faculty of Pre-University Training - a one-year program which provides the full-time undergraduate course for admission to University.

Structure of the GSMU Medical Program

The extent of the study is 6 years. Within the first three years undergraduates study vital subjects such as Anatomy, Histology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Latin and other foreign languages and Philosophy. Clinical studies for the 4th to 6 course students are conducted at hospitals and polyclinics. They master internal and surgical diseases, Obstetrics and Gynecology, infectious diseases, Oncology, Neurology, Pediatrics and many other subjects. In summer students have their practical training; nursing – after the 3th year, outpatient practice-after the 4th year, and inpatient practice – after the 5th year. In the Clinical years, students are taught through an educational method based on practical experience found in hospitals and clinics under careful supervision by practicing physicians. The knowledge assimilated in the fundamental sciences serves as a basis for the facts and concepts necessary to understand the practice of modern medicine. In the Clinical years, undergraduates develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to continue into postgraduate training. For all core rotations, the University has the required reading assignments and the hospitals offer small group teaching sessions, conferences and lectures.

The Clinical Training

Clinical training is one of the highlights of medical program of the GSMU. The clinical base composite of various general hospitals and specialized hospitals are located in the city itself, with over 5000 beds.

Students get the opportunity to view a variety of special cases daily and there are no limitations in visiting hospitals to broaden and up-date their clinical knowledge.

The clinical training, which begins from 4th year onwards ensure the development of important clinical skills such as maintaining a rapport with patients, taking a comprehensive history, doing relevant clinical examinations, decision making on investigations and treatment options etc

Groups comprising of small numbers of students (8-10) assure opportunities to each and every student to study cases. The clinical base is well equipped with advanced diagnostic techniques & treatment options. By end of 6 years, the students will have an excellent clinical exposure which will make him confident to work in any healthcare setting. Also the clinical training at the GSMU will provide the students a competitive edge in sitting for qualifying examinations such as ERPM (Sri Lanka), AMC (Australia), GMC (UK) and USMLE (USA) and MCI (India) etc.

Library facilities

Students have full access to libraries where they can refer a vast number of books. This includes both, the lending library and the reference library with limited numbers of special editions.

E – library

The e-library is very popular among students. They can go through a collection of E-books and a variety of journals, newsletters etc. free of charge. Also they have internet access in e-libraries which facilitates the access to a wide range of modern medical information.

Student Accommodation

There are two accommodation options. Students obviously have the freedom to select any of the following options as they wish for their convenience.

Option 1 – University Hostels

These are three room apartments, with a kitchen, toilet and a bathroom. There are separate blocks for boys and girls. Student hostel has a central heating system, both hot and cold water systems & gas supply to the kitchen. Rooms are furnished with single beds, chairs and study tables and wall fitted wardrobes and cupboards. Hostels are under the supervision of security personnel throughout 24 hours. Outsiders are not allowed to stay in hostels overnight.

Option 2 – Private Accommodation

Students can live in private accommodations as well. This option is obviously expensive in comparison to university hostels, but they can opt a variety of additional facilities (under the guidance of IMC staff in Belarus) as per their desire as well as budget.
